Cody War Kite:

The remarkable and flamboyant Samuel Franklin Cody was born in Bridville Texas, but moved to England in 1890 where he imitated Buffalo Bill (William Cody) in a Wild West Show. His passion, off the stage, was kiting, and in 1901, he patented a winged variation of Hargrave's double-cell box.

We have four versions of the Standard Wing Cody.

Extend Wing War Kite

Extend Wing Cody War Kite:

The British War Office eventually adopted Cody's designs for man lifting and observation. Several large Codys were launched together in trains and an observer was then lifted in a basket below. One volunteer was lifted over 2,600 feet in the air!

The extended wing War kite with a top sail is the premier kite of its genre. As the name suggests, the sails are longer and the added third "deck" provides more stability as well as an opportunity to use a contrasting sail color. Again, we have four versions of the Extended Wing Cody.

In 1913, Cody was killed in a aircraft accident. History recalls him as the first person to fly across the English Channel and he is still a national hero in Britain.

Although the War Kite and Extended Wing are better known, another very efficient kite developed.by Cody is the Compound Kite.

Barrage Kite

Sauls Barrage Kite:

Another military application of large kites was for barrage protection of ship convoys in World War II. Harry C. Sauls of the US War Shipping Administration designed a large box that was flown on wire lines, 2000 feet long. These wires were strong enough to shear the wings off strafing aircraft and provided a formidable protection to merchant vessels below.
