How did the volcano saga end?? I my last Update, I reported that I was going to the airport and looking for an early flight home. I'd been rebooked to fly Friday, five days behind schedule, which would have made connections to Japan on Saturday really tight. When faced with travel problems, I've developed a simple strategy. 1) Put myself in a place where I can be helped. If a flight comes available and I'm not in the airport, I'm not going anywhere! 2) Make friends. Airline staff respond better to smiles and courtesy than whining or bullying. 3) Tell them what you want. Offer reasonable options and clear requests. So I went to DeGaulle Airport, made pals with the United people there, and told them I expected that someone would not show when planes started to fly. And when that that happened, I said I'd like a seat. United treated me great and placed me on the first plane out of Paris! Of course, having 1.5 million miles with them doesn't hurt... |

Japan Tour - Part One Mike Agner, Jim Martin, and Al Sparling were waiting for me at Narita Airport when I landed. I'd enjoyed an intense 36 hours at home -- which was much better than the 12 originally scheduled. I'd driven Susie to Portland for her flights to Maryland. (More about that in a future Update). And then I'd flown out again myself to meet the guys for a ten day kite tour of Japan. |

This has been a great start to our Japan adventure. Staying in a private home is of course, much different from staying in a hotel. And meeting the kids provides a wonderful sense of how much we have in common as well as an appreciation for how we differ. And this is just the first of three stops. Next we head for the JKA annual gathering in Uchinada. Can we enjoy ourselves?? Yes we can!! |

We're in Japan and the kites are cool! Check out our Traditional Japanese Rok designs. Each kite is fully appliqud with zig-zag stitching used to secure overlapping fabric-to fabric. Details are boldly highlighted. Spars are attached with ribbon-ties. Edge-binding is used to provide extra detailing. We have eight patterns -- each a reproduction of original Japanese kite art and complete with an outline of the character and its meaning. They sell for $175 in the 7 by 6 foot size. But order before we come home on the 7th, and we'll take 20% off any of the eight styles. |
