The 2008 Convention in Gettysburg presented a program that ranks among the best. Featured artists were Glenn and Tanna Haynes of New Tripoli, Pennsylvania.
Glen and Tanna are known for their stunning graphics, their immaculate appliqué, and painstaking attention to detail. Twice in the late 90’s they were named the AKA Grand Champion Kitemakers. And in 2001, the Haynes received the Edeiken Trophy as Kite Fliers of the year.
Both of their top award-winning kites were on display in Gettysburg. We could get up close to see the Lady of the Clouds, and also the Lady of the Maori Sea.
AKA competitions evaluate kites based on (1) flight, (2) appearance in the sky, (3) craftsmanship, and (4) artistry. It is nice to see stuff that fliers well and has such strong visual appeal.
One of the details that set Haynes kites apart from many others is the intricate thread wrapping they use on spars. This is a technique borrowed from the fishing industry and involves decorating spars and lacquering the results. Click here for an example. Congratulations to Glen and Tanna for a wonderful show! |
